| ◆Alginic Acid Alginate is a polysaccharide contained within such life forms as brown algae. Brown algae is a type of food fiber contained in such life forms as red algae and coral weed. Pure alginate is either white or light yellow and fibrous, granular, or powdery. It is insoluble in water, but is can be extracted as sodium alginate and other alginate salts, collectively referred to as algin, that are soluble and are used, among other things, as food additives. Alginate is a common additive. Alginate propylene glycol ether and sodium alginate are commonly used as food additives. ◆Uses Food Industry: Used as thickeners, stabilizers, and gelling agents in materials such as jelly; used in diet foods, it as a food fiber Cosmetics: Used as a stabilizer Medical Treatment Alginate salts used as dental materials; Fibrous alginate gel used as surgical thread; Calcium alginate gel used to cover wounds. When In kneading alginate and water (by hand), removing bubbles is a major issue. When alginate and water are mixed using a Thinky mixer, bubbles are not allowed to form or to become trapped within the resulting substance.
